Ascot Bonus for BRUCIE

OUR BRUCIE BONUS ran in the ultra-competitive Rentokil Reflection Direction Handicap over 1400 metres at Ascot on Saturday. Hopes were high as he had recently run Shalo and She’s a Virtue close.

As expected the race was run at a fast pace, set by Sanctitude and  Full Steam Ahead. Jockey Jason Whiting settled OUR BRUCIE BONUS second from last, and appeared to give him a big task under second top weight. As the field swung into the straight BRUCIE was pushed wide as he tried to make ground. Fortunately Jason, riding with the utmost confidence, sent him after the leaders down the outside, and BRUCIE collared the lightweight Night Prowler in the last 75 metres to win going away by one length.

It was a super performance by horse and jockey, and BRUCIE’s devoted owner-breeders were ecstatic as he recorded his first Metro win. OUR BRUCIE BONUS has made huge strides this prep, as he started off winning at Toodyay in late September, and has now progressed to this success at Ascot in February. Peter and Matt have done a great job training BRUCIE so well, and Jason has ridden him very confidently despite the horse’s wayward manners at times.

It will be interesting to see if the Spirit of Bunbury gelding can continue his upward progress next prep!
