The new Bunbury season started with a bumper nine race card on Sunday. Conditions were cold and damp, but the stable had a bright start to the season with a 2nd in the first race and a win in the last.

Newcomer PROFIT STREET made a pleasing debut, running 2nd in the Welcome Back to BTC Maiden over 1000 metres. More is expected from this Viscount colt.

In the last race of the day, the Busselton TAB Handicap over 1400 metres, OUR BRUCIE BONUS was one of the outsiders, despite winning his last race at Toodyay. Punters made Halo Express a very warm favourite for the contest.

The going was officially a Dead 4, but the early stages of the race were run at a frenetic pace, with Cesc leading the field closely followed by OUR BRUCIE BONUS. The two leaders soon got the rest of the runners well spread out and, by the turn, under pressure. Seizing the opportunity, Emma Stent decided to go for home early in the straight, and she kicked the Spirit Of Bunbury gelding clear of Cesc. OUR BRUCIE BONUS appeared to love this front-running role, and he kept up a relentless gallop to the line. The favourite Halo Express tried to close but OUR BRUCIE BONUS still had a cosy 1 1/2 lengths spare at the finish.

A fantastic run under top weight, and a super start to the BTC season for the stable. Peter and Matt have done a great job to get OUR BRUCIE BONUS to win two of his three starts this prep. This home-bred son of Spirit Of Bunbury seems to have improved with age, so his happy band of owners (one of whom, Don Keene, is seen above with Peter and Emma Stent) are looking forward to a trip to Ascot in the near future.
