Bunbury success for ON TRUST

The new season opened at Bunbury on Sunday, and as usual the stable had a few runners.

After STINGRAY PETE had run a promising 4th in the maiden, we had two representatives in the Peter Strange Memorial Handicap over 1400 metres. RIVERBEND COWBOY was returning after his gelding operation, and ON TRUST was making his first appearance since recently joining the stable.

After a rather chaotic start, with a horse losing its rider, the field settled down at an even pace led by Clever I Am, with ON TRUST in 2nd place under young jockey Mitch Pateman. The order stayed unchanged until the home turn, when ON TRUST took up the running, with all his opponents stacked up behind and looking ready to pounce. Surprisingly, despite many challenges down the straight, ON TRUST kept on galloping relentlessly, and by the line he was still 3/4 of a length ahead of Civil Rights, with the favourite a further 1 1/2 lengths back in 3rd.

ON TRUST, a 6 year old Choisir gelding, obviously likes the Bunbury air, and this victory at long odds was no¬† doubt a welcome fillip to his owners T Smithson and A T J Putterill. It was also great for the stable to get a winner on the opening day at Bunbury. Let’s hope there are many more to come!
