Giadresco Race Day Celebrates Peter’s 10th Championship

Saturday, May 5th, 2007

Bunbury’s last meeting of the season was a special day for Peter, his family and all his friends and owners. The occasion was marked by the whole race day being sponsored by the stable’s owners, with the races named after horses, both past and present. The Big Top marquee was decked out in the stable’s colours of red and white, and photographs of many of Peter’s winners over the years adorned the walls. Needless to say everyone who attended had a great day, which was topped off by Lexicon Gold winning the feature race.

The main race of the day was the Class 5 Early Express Handicap over 1400 metres, and Lexicon Gold was made favourite despite him meeting older horses for the first time. As the race unfolded, Shaun McGruddy settled Toby perfectly just off the pacemakers. At the 300 metre mark Lexicon Gold moved up to the leaders, and sprinted away in a matter of metres, to win eased down by a comfortable 3¾ lengths. This was an impressive victory, and the horse will now be aimed at some metro races.

The presentation, by one of Early Express’s owners Joe Italiano, was made extra special by Sam himself being paraded in the mounting yard after the race.

Jungle Hawk did his best to complete a stable double but was just run out of it in the closing stages of the season’s last race, to finish an honourable 2nd.

Bunbury Turf Club held its Annual Awards Night after the meeting, and the highlight was Peter receiving his 10th successive Trainers Championship from Committee man David Moyes. In his acceptance speech Peter thanked all his family and owners for their support, and although this was the fulfilment of one of his life’s ambitions, it won’t stop him trying to make it eleven!
