First WA win for POP HERO

The ex-South Australian POP HERO was having his fourth start in WA at Belmont on Wednesday. Although he was relatively unfancied in a competitive field for the Sunday Times Handicap over 1200 metres, POP HERO’s soft track form gave him a real chance on a soft 6.

As the barriers opened the apprentice-ridden Shostakovich speared across the field from its outside gate and attempted to make all. Jason Whiting settled POP HERO in a great position, four back and on the rail. Well into the home straight, Shostakovich showed no sign of stopping, and although POP HERO started to make his run at the 300 metre mark, he only made steady headway. Finally, in the last 50 metres, he drew level with the leader and managed to win by a short head.

Peter and Matt were pleased that POP HERO had broken his duck in WA and if the tracks remain soft there should be more success to follow.
