After a quiet time for the stable, with few runners after the hectic provincial season, it was good to record a win.

FRIARDAY was the popular pick for the WG Wooltorton Memorial Handicap over 1600 metres at Northam on Thursday. The Blackfriars gelding had been unlucky at Pinjarra, so punters didn’t want to miss out this time.

After his customary slow start FRIARDAY raced kindly at the rear of the field, as Light The Skies cut out the early running. Jockey Peter Hall waited until the home straight before asking the horse to make his run. FRIARDAY responded in good style, but had to fight hard to overcome the gallant Marbella Flyer to win by a short neck.

A pleasing result for FRIARDAY’s connections, Elio and Jackie Galante and their good friend Ray Green, and they will be looking forward to the rest of the season with their genuine stayer.
