The consistent mare LOUISIANA LADY was made favourite for the Perth Ice Works Handicap over 1400 metres at Ascot on Wednesday.

The home-bred Bletchley Park mare had been narrowly beaten in her last two runs at Bunbury, so we were hoping for better luck this time.

The race was run at a muddling pace, with Bitter Emu and Handful of Dust sharing the early lead. Glenn Smith rode LOUISIANA LADY patiently, and didn’t make his move until the 200 metre mark. The mare quickened well and sprinted into the lead, to win by 1 1/2 lengths from Mount Marion and the fast finishing Vanity Fair.

This was a richly deserved win for LOUISIANA LADY, and an early Christmas present for her enthusiastic owners.
