MIGHTY
RONNIE GRABS COUNTRY CHALLENGE FINAL AT ASCOT |
|
The
highlight of a good week for the stable was Mighty Ronnie’s
great triumph in the Country Challenge Final at Ascot on Saturday. Qualifiers
from all the nine heats from racetracks around WA lined up for this prestigious
race, over 1500 metres. Kingston Classic hopeful Lambton Castle was odds
on favourite, and most pundits predicted that the rest of the field were
running for 2nd place! The pace was on from the beginning of the race,
and Jason Whiting had Mighty Ronnie beautifully positioned,
just behind the leaders. As the field entered the straight the favourite
went to the front, and looked the winner, but then Ronnie
came with a powerful burst to challenge in the last 100 metres. The horses
went neck and neck to the line and, under a strong ride from Jason, Mighty
Ronnie grabbed the victory by a short half head.
This was a fantastic win for a comparatively inexperienced horse, and a particularly special triumph for Peter and owner Rocky Dagostino, who have raced horses together for many years. Tributes to the ever-popular Rocky were paid by both Darren McAullay and Wes Cameron – along with one or two stories! It was also great to see Rocky lead in his winner, accompanied by his son, who made a gracious speech when accepting the trophy on his father’s behalf. … AND LEXICON GOLD MAKES IT A DOUBLE! Earlier in the afternoon Lexicon Gold was a warm favourite for the Go For 2&5 Handicap over 1400 metres, and he didn’t disappoint his backers. This race was run at a cracking pace, set by the outsider Dragon Whiz. On the home turn the leader shot clear, and all of a sudden Lexicon Gold had 5 lengths to find but, as jockey Jason Whiting said afterwards, “Toby is a very genuine horse” and, when asked for his effort, he sprinted up to Dragon Whiz to win, going away, by a long neck. The time of the race was very fast, and Toby’s finishing burst augurs well for the future. DEBUTANT
MARUNOUCHI SCORES On Wednesday the stable was well represented at Bunbury’s Boxing Day meeting, and in the Healthway Daily Double Maiden over 1100 metres the well bred Marunouchi made his racecourse debut. He had drawn badly, but Jason Whiting was full of confidence, and jumped Marunouchi straight into the lead. The horse settled well in front, and just kept going at a strong pace. In the last 100 metres, not surprisingly, he started to tire, and Delta Bay launched a threatening challenge, but Marunouchi had enough in hand to gain a well deserved first up win. His enthusiastic owners were on course to welcome him home (see picture) and are no doubt already dreaming of further success with this promising sort. The horse is related on the dam’s side to the family of Scopaciri and a number of Peter’s home breds.
There were a number of other promising runs by the stable’s horses during the afternoon, notably Wye River and Miss Deburgh, who finished 2nd and 3rd respectively behind Urlay Nook in the Eat More Veg Maiden over 1400 metres.

BUNBURY DOUBLE! |
|
|
Wednesday was a very busy day for the stable at Bunbury’s
last meeting before Christmas.
Our first winner of the day was the ever-consistent Jungle Hawk, who ran in the Grand Harmony Double Handicap over 1200 metres. His record so far this season (three runs for three places) ensured that he was a popular favourite for this race. A very fast pace was set from the barriers, but young Chloe Chatfield positioned the horse perfectly just behind the leaders. As the field turned for home Jungle Hawk quickly moved up to the pacemakers and sprinted away to win in most impressive fashion by 3½ lengths. A richly deserved win for Jungle Hawk, who has always run well but tended to run into a metro horse on the way up. Peter was delighted at the copybook ride of apprentice Chloe Chatfield.
There
were also good performances by Mighty Ronnie who finished
a close 2nd in the Country Challenge Heat, Tuffaz who
finished 3rd in his maiden, and Price Monger who also
finished 3rd in the last race of the day, the Scott Park Group Handicap.

LEXICON’S ASCOT GOLD RUSH |
|
At Ascot
on Wednesday Lexicon Gold took on a small field in the
Pago Escort Handicap over 1400 metres. The early pace was set by Late
Money, with Lexicon Gold settled nicely in 2nd place
by Jason Whiting. On straightening Toby was asked for his effort and he
moved smartly intot he lead, running home for an easy victory over Late
Money. This was Lexicon Gold’s first metro win,
and let’s hope there is more to come this prep. Mick Stewart, one
of the part owners, was delighted to lead Toby in after his victory.

PERFECT
ASCOT DEBUT |
|
|
The aptly named Performance Plus made his racecourse debut at Ascot on Saturday. The Dr Johnson colt went to post in the $45,000 Westpeed 2yo Plate over 1000 metres, in which none of the runners had racecourse experience, so it was a big step for all eight babies. Performance Plus took all the preliminaries in his stride, and once the race began Paul King settled him nicely in midfield. As the field straightened for home Performance Plus was angled out to make his run, and he quickly sprinted up to catch the leaders. In the last 50 metres he passed the front-running Sheenasaidgrey to win going away by ¾ length. Jockey Paul King was full of praise for the horse’s professional debut, and predicted that the owners would have a lot of fun with him
This was the stable's first 2yo runner of the new season, so a very good way to start! This flashy-looking colt is owned by John Screaigh Snr. John Screaigh Jnr, Peter and Faye, who were all particularly delighted as they bred him themselves.

HARTLEY’S SO NEARLY LIVES THE DREAM! |
|
Ascot
on Saturday saw the first $1,000,000 Group
1 Carlton Draught Railway Stakes. The stable’s representative
was the Bletchley Park gelding Hartley’s Dream.
After he drew the outside barrier of the field, everyone feared the worst,
despite Peter having prepared the horse perfectly for the race. A great
deal depended on the jockeyship of Paul King, and he managed to get Hartley’s
onto the inside rail early in the race. As the field thundered down the
straight, several horses made a bid for victory, but Paul waited until
the last 150 metres to angle Hartley’s Dream out
to challenge. The horse answered his every call, and he charged home to
finish 2nd, only a length behind the hot favourite, El Presidente.
This was a fantastic effort by horse and rider, and of course by Peter to bring Hartley’s Dream back to his best at the age of 7, after a history of foot problems. Bernie Stephens, well known for his Hartley Estates winery and colourful willy wagtail silks, was thrilled by his horse’s run, especially as he bred Hartley’s Dream himself, and still has his dam Prohurst at home, and his half brother Hartley’s Spirit at stud. A great day for everyone connected with the stable.
Peter has now trained the runner-up in WA’s most prestigious and
valuable race for three of the last five years. |

DOCTOR GOLDEN WINS BUNBURY THRILLER! |
|
|
The stable was well represented at Bunbury’s first Sunday meeting
of the new season. The highlight of the day was the win of Doctor
Golden in the Sprite Handicap, over 1400 metres. After his great
first up run on Melbourne Cup Day, the Doctor was made a warm favourite
for this race, despite some good quality opposition. The race was run
at a strong pace, and Doctor Golden found himself in
a difficult position entering the home straight. Eventually Jason Whiting
was able to angle out for an outside run, but at the 200 metre mark it
looked as though he had no chance to catch the leaders, which were not
stopping. Doctor Golden sprinted hard and, putting in
a desperate dive on the line, won by a short half head, to the relief
of all his supporters! This was a gutsy win by the Dr Johnson 4yo, and
he looks to have an exciting prep ahead of him, especially as he steps
up to more suitable distances. It was great to have his veteran part-owner
John Screaigh Snr and his family on course to enjoy the victory.
Several of the other stable representatives ran well, Miss Deburgh finishing an honourable 2nd to the highly rated Transaction in her maiden. Spirited Rocket, making his season's reappearance, ran on strongly to finish 3rd in his maiden race, and Mighty Ronnie showed plenty of promise for the future with a good run in the last race of the day over a shorter distance than he would like. All three horses look likely winners in the near future. |

MAIDEN VICTORY FOR ZOOMTIME |
|
After
three 3rds at Bunbury’s opening meeting, the stable hit the target
with the beautifully bred Zoomtime on Melbourne Cup Day.
A full field went to post in the first race of the day, the Holden Captivo
Maiden over 1100 metres, and Zoomtime was made a warm
favourite. Clint Harvey jumped the colt straight to the front from the
barriers, and set such a strong pace that none of Zoomtime’s
rivals got in a position to challenge, and he ran out an easy winner.
This was a great start to his campaign, and he should be seen in town
soon.
The afternoon continued with Doctor Golden running a very good 2nd on his return to the track, over a distance that is too short for him. A good prep beckons. The debutant Tonymo ran a promising 3rd in his maiden, much to the delight of his enthusiastic owner! On the same afternoon, Chance In Time made his Ascot debut in the Listed Fairetha Stakes and, despite meeting trouble in running, finished 3rd to two of the State’s top 3 year olds. This was a fantastic achievement by a horse having only his second ever run, and he appears to have a bright future. To finish the week, Just Les and Scopaciri both ran in the Flexi Quaddie Handicap at Ascot on Saturday, finishing 3rd and 4th respectively in an exceptionally fast run race. |

SCOPACIRI’S ASCOT TRIUMPH! |
|
Family
favourite Scopaciri delighted everyone with terrific win
in the Smirnoff Handicap over 1200 metres on Ascot’s opening day.
Once again Max was unfancied for the race, as the short price favourite
Reflective Star was all the rage. As the field jumped William Pike fired
Scopaciri out of the barriers and managed to settle him
behind the pacemaker Dante’s Volonte. William patiently waited until
well into the straight before making his move, but Reflective Star moved
quickly to cover. For a stride or two it looked as though Max would be overtaken,
but under a copybook hands and heels ride, William got a renewed effort
from Scopaciri and he held off the favourite to win by
a short neck. This was a great victory by both horse and rider, and of course
for Peter by bringing Max back to top form.DEBUT WIN FOR CHANCE IN TIME
At Northam on Wednesday the beautifully bred colt Chance In Time made his eagerly-awaited debut, in the Northamraceclub.com Maiden over 1300 metres. There was a full field of 14 runners, with a number of fancied horses from the top Ascot stables. As is usual in maiden races at Northam, the pace was hot, and Jason Whiting positioned Chance In Time in mid field. As the runners came into the straight, Chance It Time managed to get a run and came down the middle of the track to lead at the 200 metre mark. The Danetime colt moved easily away from his field and won in effortless fashion. This was an impressive debut by Chance In Time, who may very well run at Ascot next time out. Two of the three owners, Peter and Ken Kingston, were on course to welcome back their winner. |

MAX IS BACK! |
|
|
After the stable’s traditional winter break, when staff and horses get a well earned rest, everything is gearing up for a successful spring and summer campaign. It was great to kick off with a Saturday win at Belmont with the family owned Scopaciri.
Training five year
old stallions is never easy, and it was a fantastic effort to get Max,
as he is known at home, back to peak fitness, to show all his old battling
qualities. A small but select field went to post for the $45,000 Busy
Raider Handicap over 1000 metres, but despite his close 2nd last week,
none of the pundits gave Scopaciri any chance from
his wide barrier. Breaking smartly, Shaun O'Donnell soon had Max beautifully
positioned behind the pacemaker Maxximus Dignitas. At the 200 metre
mark Scopaciri was asked for his effort, and he readily
went into the lead, but he was immediately challenged, and briefly headed,
by the favourite Diamond Highway. Max would not be denied however, and
sticking his head out he fought back for a well deserved victory. |

GIADRESCO RACE DAY CELEBRATES PETER’S 10TH CHAMPIONSHIP |
|
|
Bunbury’s
last meeting of the season was a special day for Peter, his family and
all his friends and owners. The occasion was marked by the whole race
day being sponsored by the stable’s owners, with the races named
after horses, both past and present. The Big Top marquee was decked out
in the stable’s colours of red and white, and photographs of many
of Peter’s winners over the years adorned the walls. Needless to
say everyone who attended had a great day, which was topped off by Lexicon
Gold winning the feature race.
The main race of the day was the Class 5 Early Express Handicap over 1400 metres, and Lexicon Gold was made favourite despite him meeting older horses for the first time. As the race unfolded, Shaun McGruddy settled Toby perfectly just off the pacemakers. At the 300 metre mark Lexicon Gold moved up to the leaders, and sprinted away in a matter of metres, to win eased down by a comfortable 3¾ lengths. This was an impressive victory, and the horse will now be aimed at some metro races.
The
presentation, by one of Early Express's owners Joe Italiano, was made
extra special by Sam himself being paraded in the mounting yard after
the race. |

MAGIC ACES CUP RIVALS! |
|
![]() The stable made one of its rare visits to Narrogin on Sunday, with ex star galloper Magic Aces, seen above, for the Narrogin Cup.
Everyone was delighted with this win for the Doctor, as he is affectionately known, as he has been off the track for 2½ years following injury. It rates as one of Peter’s great training feats, to get Magic Aces not only back to the track, but winning good races again. Peter is seen here receiving the Narrogin Gold Cup from RWWA Chief Handicapper David Hunter. |

LEXICON GOLD DOUBLES UP |
|
| The
stable had five runners at Bunbury on Thursday, as Peter attempts to win
his 10th successive Trainers’ Championship.
In the Dairy Farmers Maiden over 1400 metres Northern Express tried to make all, and although he battled on strongly in the straight, he was caught by the eventual winner Princess Hannah, and had to be content with a dead-heat 2nd with Off Ramp. In the Class 2 Handicap
over 1675 metres, Doctor Golden had no luck from his
outside draw, and despite finishing well he could only manage 6th, which
was a good run in the circumstances.
In the Devondale Handicap Class 2 over 1100 metres, Lexicon Gold was made a hot favourite to give William Pike a last-race winner. The leaders set a fast pace from the barriers, and William settled Toby back in 5th place. At the 250 metre mark he appeared to have quite a task, but when asked for his effort Lexicon Gold sprinted impressively to catch and draw away from his rivals, winning by an authoritative 1¾ lengths. Peter is very pleased with the progress Toby is making this preparation, and was delighted to give part-owner Beryl Stewart a great 70th birthday present! |

LEXICON GOLD SHINES ON STAKES DAY |
|
|
The stable had a relatively small team of horses entered for the Bunbury Carnaval, but Stakes Day started in the best possible fashion when Lexicon Gold took out the City and Regional Fuels Maiden over 1100 metres. This was the gelding’s fifth run, and after his close-up 2nd last time he was made favourite by punters. Toby, as he is known to his happy owners, didn’t jump in his best fashion, which forced jockey Shaun McGruddy to race wide most of the way, but when asked for his effort Lexicon Gold came home strongly to catch the leader and win by a short neck. Toby’s last 600 metres was the quickest of the day, which promises well for the future. Two of the part-owners, Pauline Streets, left, and Beryl Stewart were delighted to lead in their winner! In the third race
Polar Blaze ran another honest race to finish 3rd in
the 1675 metres maiden, and will surely win soon. |

DOCTOR GOLDEN BREAKS THROUGH |
|
After
a frustrating run of 2nds , both at the Provincials and in Perth, it was
great to have a winner again at Bunbury last Wednesday. The day had started
well with Lexicon Gold and Northern Express
running 2nd and 3rd in their respective Maidens. It was good to see Northern
Express running again after a long break through injury, and
we hope he’ll be a winner very soon.
In the Oakland Park/De
Grey Park Maiden over 1400 metres, Doctor Golden, seen
here returning with Shaun McGruddy aboard, went one better when battling
home strongly in the rain-softened ground to repel the late challenge
of Skyline Prince and gain a well-deserved victory.
CUP 2nd FOR MAGIC HAUL
On Sunday Magic Haul lined up in the listed XXXX Gold Pinjarra Cup over 2300 metres. Unfortunately he drew the outside barrier of the field, and despite jockey Paul King's best endeavours he was forced to run wide most of the race. At the corner his chance appeared to have gone, but with clear running down the outside Magic Haul put in a tremendous sprint, and only failed by a narrow margin to run down former Perth Cup winner Black Tom. This horse has made huge progress this prep, going from a provincial horse to a potential Cup winner, and picking up over $100,000 on the way. He is seen above returning after the race alongside winner Black Tom. If he draws a barrier in the forthcoming Bunbury Cup, he must go very close.

EAGLES’ HORSE FLIES HIGH AT MT. BARKER! |
|
On
Thursday the stable had one of its rare runners at Mount Barker in the
Right Wing Maiden, over 1100 metres. Accountability,
owned by members of the West Coast Eagles’ coaching staff, was ignored
by punters, despite a promising first run at Bunbury. As the race unfolded,
Accountability was positioned well forward by jockey
Link Robertson. After straightening the horse was asked to accelerate
and gained a definite advantage, which he held to the line. This was a
good effort by the aptly-named Accountability who is
gaining valuable experience this prep. The horse, seen here relaxing back
at home after the race, should give his high profile owners plenty of

FIRST METRO SUCCESS FOR KENT RIVER |
|
The stable’s phenomenal recent run of success continued at Ascot on Saturday with our sole representative, Kent River, saluting in the Quadrant Handicap over 1600 metres. After his win last time out at Pinjarra, it was surprising to see Kent River going to post as one of the outsiders in the race, with L’Escapade a very hot favourite. As the race started jockey Paul King positioned the horse perfectly, and tracked the favourite into the straight. With 150 metres to go, Kent River was asked for his effort, and he responded immediately to win by a cosy 1 length. Unfortunately his happy owners were unable to be on course, but thoroughly enjoyed their horse’s first Metro success, and were fulsome in their praise for Paul King’s excellent ride and Peter’s training of this injury-prone horse. At
Bunbury on Sunday, we had 4 runners, and although we didn’t have
a winner we had two 2nds, a 3rd and a 4th. One of the most pleasing runs
was by 2 year old debutant Core Asset who gave notice
of future success with a close-up 2nd in the 2 year old maiden over 1000
metres. |

SPIRIT SPRINTS TO METRO WIN |
|
After much well-documented bad luck, Spirit of Bunbury, seen here being led in by syndicate member Andy Streets, finally gained his deserved first Metro win on Saturday at Ascot. A small but select field went to post for the Special Conditions Handicap over 1400 metres, with Bruce drawn on the outside in barrier 7. As soon as the gates opened, he was beautifully positioned by his new rider Paul King, and was ready to pounce on the leaders as they entered the home straight. Once Bruce was asked to go, the race was all over, and under Paul King’s expert left-hand drive, he drew away from the field to win by a convincing 2 lengths. Everyone was delighted with the win after recent disappointments, and both Peter and Paul think that Spirit of Bunbury will stay longer distances in the future. KENT
RIVER WINS FRUIT & VEG!! - AND MIGHTY RONNIE MAKES IT A PINJARRA DOUBLE The stable has a terrific strike rate at Pinjarra, and last Thursday was no exception, with both runners winning. ![]()
In the day's feature race, the Fruit & Veg Handicap Class 5 over 1400 metres, Kent River faced some stiff opposition, notably the well-fancied Secret Courier, but the horse was well-rated throughout by jockey Paul King, and came with a great late run to snatch victory from the favourite on the line. Kent River is becoming a bit of a track specialist, as this is his second victory here. Part owner Mike De Nicolis is seen here leading the horse in, and Mike Fagan accepted the trophy on behalf of the other owners.

MAGIC HAUL RACES TO ASCOT VICTORY |
|
| The
stable had four runners at Ascot's Saturday meeting this week, who experienced
mixed fortunes. The day started perfectly, when Magic Haul,
running in the Heed the Toll Handicap over 1600 metres, sprinted past
his rivals in the closing stages for a thrilling win. The horse was
well ridden by Paul King, but Magic Haul showed what a tough horse he
is, buttering up so quickly after his 2nd on Perth Cup Day. The other runners were not so lucky. Just Les ran his usual honest race to finish 4th in the 1000 metre race for 3YO and upwards. This was a good run by Les, taking on the older horses for the first time and running after a short let-up. Next time could be interesting! Spirited Gem tried his heart out as always, but as an 8YO is finding Metro racing rather hard these days. In the last race
of the afternoon, over 1400 metres, hopes were high that Spirit
of Bunbury would make up for his luckless run in the Country
Challenge. Unfortunately it was not to be, Bruce finding more trouble
in the race, and despite his tremendous sprint at the end, he failed
by a fast-diminishing neck to catch the winner. YET ANOTHER BUNBURY DOUBLE! A large team went to the races at Bunbury on Wednesday, and the stable was rewarded with two winners, two 3rds and an honourable 4th.
